Based on survey indicating that most Line Interactive and Standby UPS systems are prone to drop
load when powering new and future computers, build to  latest green oriented regulations,
UPSonNet introduces a selection guide to help specifying and selecting proper APC UPS system,
that works properly both with conservative computers and with the new green oriented types.

Most users are still unaware of the problem, which is mainly discussed on user forums, whereas
the amount of such new computers is continuously growing, due to computer manufacturer's
effort to comply with regulations.

Introduction of these new computer types has immense significance on UPS selection, utilization
and specification, particularly as related to the following two aspects:

  • Both UPS VA ( Volt- Ampere) and UPS Watt rating should be above the respectable figures
    of computers powered by it. Conservatively, most UPS systems have 0.7 Power Factor;
meaning that UPS wattage rating is only 70% of its VA rating. Thus attention to UPS
    Wattage rating is required.

  • The new computers are designed to work properly when powered from the utility. They
will continue to work properly on power outage with a sinusoidal type inverter. The exact
behavior when the power fails with non sinusoidal inverter depends on the particular
computer power supply design and UPS loading. Load can drop either due to computer
power supply shut down when connected to such Inverter, or due to UPS shut down
because of overload occurring when the UPS switches from line to inverter.

The problem is further complicated due to the following reasons:

1.Users that purchased new computers, and didn't experience power failure yet, may be unaware
of the problem, and reveal it when the lights go out.

2. Many UPS sellers have no idea what kind of output wave form is supplied in the UPS
which they sell, and lack the knowledge to assist buyers.

3. Type of UPS waveform doesn't appear on trading websites, not always mentioned in
UPS brochures, and sometimes not declared even in technical UPS specs.

The  Guide presents main parameters, of main APC Line Interactive and Standby Single phase
120V UPS systems, in order to help you to select a proper UPS for current and future loads.

The following information is provided for each UPS system:

1.  UPS Type & Catalog Number,  with a link to the manufacturer's specification page.

2.
Topology: Standby or Line Interactive.

3.    Type of Inverter wave form: Sinusoidal is the preferred type,. Stepped wave ,should not be
generally selected for new or future computers.

4.
VA and Watt Power Ratings. Each should be above the respective total (summed) value
of  all loads powered by the UPS.

5.
Input Operating Voltage: Larger input voltage should be preferred to avoid frequent
transfer to Battery backup, thus extending battery life.

6.
Efficiency at Full and Half Load . The efficiency figure enables to calculate UPS running
costs and cooling requirements, if used for data centers.

7.
Battery Recharge Hours: Short recharge times should be preferred. Rated backup time is
provided only when total battery charge is replenished.

8.
Backup Time in minutes at Full Load ( FL) and Half Load ( HL): Battery time
increases non proportionally when load is decreased. The FL and HL ratings enable you to
estimate backup time with your load , or if  you plan to increase it.

9.
Display type: LCD or Led. LCD: provides generally enhanced and text information about
UPS status and Alarms, and should be preferred.

10.
 UPS Price in US $.

The guide  includes most popular systems, which should be considered. It  displays the needed and
sufficient information, presented in a clear and comprehensive form, in order to reach a
reasonable,  justified and cost effective decision which UPS to select for protecting new
computers and which should be avoided.

APC was selected due to its market dominance in this sector. The guide can be used also to
compare specifications and features of other makes before decision is derived.
