Editorial Topic:  Insights, Problems & Solutions Learned in 2010.

Proceed to the desired destination:

January 2010: UPS Upgrading Costs and Gains

The topic considers the associated costs of UPS upgrading in data centers, by replacing an old UPS
with a new system. A cost effective upgrading routine is suggested, which   based on presented
calculation returns initial investment within 2.5 years, granting about 40% additional income.

February 2010:  How Much to Pay for the Best UPS?

UPSonNet survey of single phase online UPS systems reveals enormous differences in specifications,
efficiencies, features and prices, when same size UPS systems from different manufacturers are
compared. The review shows that no correlation between performance and UPS price exists, offering
an approach to derive most cost effective approach.

March 2010:  When the UPS Turns the Power Down

March topic considers Possible UPS failures, which drop the load. The paper considers the reasons of
total UPS failure, when utility power is available, the impact of such failure on user's future decisions
to work with the UPS suppliers, as well as the possible remedies to avoid or mitigate future
occurrences.

April 2010:  Impact of Backup Batteries on UPS Reliability

The influence of UPS battery MTBF on total MTBF of a UPS system is considered, focusing
particularly on three phase systems, where generally the battery bank comprises numerous batteries
connected in series. It suggests preventive battery maintenance and replacement practice, which
based on presented calculation almost triples total MTBF figure.

May 2010: Best Backup Battery Technology

In search of a battery technology which overcomes the main drawbacks of Lead Acid battery, such
as limited discharge cycles, poor temperature performance, low energy to weight ratio, and ecological
concerns, a new alternative battery, already on the market is presented. Main Specifications of 280V
60AH Lead Acid battery bank are compared side by side with similar new battery bank, indicating the
distinct technological advantages of the latter.

June 2010: UPS Waveform & New Computer Servers

New computer servers with Active Power Factor Correction (APFC), designed to meet recent green
oriented legislation such as Energy Star, may malfunction when connected to a UPS with rectangular
or semi sinusoidal inverter. The power supplies of such servers are built to work from pure sinusoidal
source, and frequently turn off or trip the server when non- sinusoidal UPS Inverter voltage, supplied
by backup UPS and most Line interactive UPS systems is applied. In addition the article addresses
current difficulties of obtaining information about the type of UPS waveform from UPS suppliers.

July 2010: How to Specify an Off Line UPS to Meet Green Oriented Regulations.

Following June's newsletter, specifying of  Standby and Line interactive UPS systems is examined.
The article focuses particularly on requirements of UPS output Power Factor and UPS output
waveform, to ascertain server's proper operation with new servers, which comply with latest green
oriented standards. Based on UPSonNet review, which indicates current difficulty of UPS Off- Line
market to answer users' needs to protect new computers, a solution in locating and selecting the
proper UPS systems is offered.

August 2010: How to Drop a Protected Computer when the Lights Go Down?

August topic concerns the most common practices adhered by UPS users, which may eventually drop
the load when the utility power fails. Online UPS ability to supply power from the utility via the
Bypass in case of UPS failure, and directly from mains with a Standby or Line Interactive systems,
bring frequently about user's unawareness to UPS latent malfunction. The article concerns five main
practices, used unknowingly by UPS users, which if not avoided result in load dropping when the
utility power goes down.

September 2010: The Right Power Protection Strategy for Now and the Future

Redundant operation is offered by UPS manufacturers in order to meet high reliability requirements of
critical installation, and scalability feature to enable UPS growth to meet future power demands. Both
Redundancy and Scalability are achieved by paralleling UPS systems, which can be performed only
with same type, size and make systems. In addition, scalability reduces total reliability and efficiency
affecting also other aspects that need consideration. The article presents possible scenarios that
emphasize the importance of strategic approach to UPS protection, leading to a guide which enables to
implement such strategy.

October 2010: Boosting UPS Efficiency with New Design Approach

Most UPS systems can meet basic user's demands; making cost the conclusive element in customer's
decision. Examining high power UPS cost structure reveals that wasted electricity on running the UPS
over its lifetime generally exceeds other cost items, particularly when conservative static UPS designs
which provide 90% efficient systems are compared with new designs offering 95% efficiency.
Reconsideration of the classical three phase bridge inverter topology, as well as the switching
components and structure in order to increase UPS efficiency above 95% efficiency, is suggested.

November 2010: Life Expectancy of Backup Batteries

November topic investigates Battery life time classification, causes of UPS battery failure, and
maintenance procedure to extend battery life. The article treats such items as: defining battery lifetime
figure, battery failure modes, selection of UPS battery for long lifetime operation, and Maintenance
practices affecting UPS battery lifetime.

UPSonNet Website News

We are in process of preparing new material, which will be presented in 2011. We repeat however,
here items presented in November newsletter, still relevant for the attention of new subscribers, or
anyone that missed taking action:

UPS Industry News

Holidays and end of year tasks are probably the cause for reduced industry announcements in
December.  We would like however to call attention to Eaton's news release brief, presented on
UPSonNet December News , about Eaton's partnership with Managing Service Providers to offer
remote monitoring of UPS and Power components.
Best described by Chris Reid, product analyst with N-able Technologies:

"Having the capability to easily monitor and manage the power and cooling solutions within a client’s
network remotely is a tremendous value for our MSP partners. Power and cooling represent lifelines
for IT networks, and giving N-central users the insight into how those components of the network
are performing is something we’re very excited to bring to market.”
