Private Cloud Vrtualization Reduces UPS and Backup costs.
EMC Corporation, announces that Northern Hospital of Surry County, a community hospital in
Mount Airy, N.C. has implemented EMC and VMware solutions to virtualize and consolidate its IT
infrastructure for increased efficiency, agility and data protection. The Virtualization saves
hundreds of thousands of dollars by eliminating 20 servers, by  decreasing power usage and
avoiding a $25,000 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) upgrade, reducing network congestion and
backup storage requirements by 80 percent, compressing full nightly backup windows from 14
hours to less than one hour, and reaching 70-80 percent server virtualization within the next year.

Survey: Budget, Power Requirements & Availability Top Concerns in Hospital IT.
Emerson Network Power publishes new survey which includes responses from North America-
based professionals in IT management/IT operations, data center management and facilities
management. The survey reports budget, power requirements and availability as top concerns. The
survey indicates that due to budget consideration just 28 percent of operating rooms have
emergency power receptacles serviced through UPS. This lack of protection makes critical patient
data vulnerable to downtime as there is no ride-through until the hospital’s emergency generators
can assume the critical load.
