APC Recommends UPS and Surge Protection of Data and Equipment in Middle East.
APC research, of Middle East and Africa UPS market is estimated to touch $488.4m by 2012 from
$282m in 2007, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.6 per cent. The growth is driven
by extreme weather conditions in the region, increasing Power consumption especially during peak
seasons such as the summer months due to heavy use of air-conditioners, causing pressure on the

North American Industrial UPS Marke Growth Forecast Despite Decrease in general UPS Demand.
According to Frost&Sullivan report, the demand of UPS in North America is likely to decrease due
to saturated UPS technologies, shifting of operations toward the Asia Pacific and eastern Europe
due to cheap labor and low-production cost, and increased power density levels in the IT sector.
In addition, the market is likely to witness more price erosion, due to competition among market
participants, leading to lower profit margins. However, boost of Industrial UPS market is expected
due to increase in such markets as Oil &Gas, Automation in process control, and manufacturing

Hazardous Material Shipping Regulations Classifying is Considered for Lithium Batteries.
Following more than 40 incidents with Lithium batteries recorded by the Federal Aviation
Administration between 1991 and Aug. 3, 2010, which have smoked, heated up or caused fires,
US Federal government considers tighter regulations for transporting these batteries. The rules
proposed by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration would ensure that
batteries are packaged to reduce the possibility of damage. Lithium batteries were suspected as the
cause of a February 2006 fire on a UPS plane that landed in Philadelphia, and recent United Parcel
Service plane crash that killed two pilots in Dubai on Sept. 3. 2010. The batteries
currently are not classified as hazardous and no labeling requirements exist to inform pilots
whether their cargo contains lithium batteries.

NASA Deploys Power Management to Cut Data Center Energy Consumption.
NASA working under executive order 13514, which requires up to a 30% reduction in greenhouse
gas emissions by 2020, deploys power management software from Power Assure to aggregate
power consumption data from its 75 data centers. Initial deployment results indicate in the short
term, increasing operating temperatures from its present value of  about 18 ºC to 30-32 ºC that
industry associations now say is safe, will be an easier way to reduce energy usage than
consolidation via virtualization.
