Japan Vendors Prefer Li Ion over Lead Acid Batteries to Overcome Recurring Power Cuts.  
March 11 earthquake in Japan, tsunami and nuclear-power crisis cause power black outs for a
few hours a day , boosting backup power requirements,  damping economic progress. The market
evidences lack of lead acid batteries, which when available suffer from limited storage capacity
due to frequent discharges. Toshiba, Panasonic and GS Yuasa are considering Li ion battery

Zonit Single Power Supply devices ATS accepts UL approval.
Zonit Structured Solutions, received UL approval for its µATS Automatic Transfer Switch.
The switch which plugs directly into the back of single-power-supply devices, such as servers
and routers, transfers the input of device to redundant backup source whenever it senses
unacceptable primary line voltage. The first Zonit µATS model is available in a 15-amp, 120-volt
version enabling 99% power efficiency.

Facebook Unveils its Custom Data Center Servers and UPS Design.
Facebook unveils details of its custom-built servers, racks and UPS units that designed for its new
data center in Prineville, Oregon USA. This is released as part of the new Open Compute Project,
technology available under the Open Web Foundation license initiative, aimed to create open
standards for data center design. UPS design is based on in-row UPS units, each housing 20
batteries, with five strings of 48 volt DC batteries. Facebook’s power supplies are designed for
utility power and for the DC-based UPS system.
