Emerson Reports Cost of Data Center Power Outage US $ 258,000 to $ 680,000 Emerson's report, based on a recent Ponemon Institute study, "Calculating the Cost of Data Center Outages,". Highlightst that for a total data center outage, which had an average recovery time of 134 minutes, average costs were approximately $680,000. For a partial data center outage, which averaged 59 minutes in length, average costs were approximately $258,000. Emerson cites also highlights results of 2010 Panamon study, indicating that respondents experienced 2.5 complete data center outages during the past two years, data center outages, or those limited to certain racks, occurred 6.8 times. Reporters cited UPS battery failure (65 percent), as the main cause of unplanned data server outages, exceeding UPS capacity (53 percent), accidental emergency power off/human error (51 percent), and UPS equipment failure (49 percent). Poneman Study: The Cost of Data Center Outages Ponemon Institute study "Calculating the Cost of Data Center Outages," sponsored by Emerson , at 41 data centers in USA, reveals that cost of downtime in a data center averages $ 5,600 per minute. On average, total outages occurred once a year and device-level outages occurred every two months, resulting in 90 minutes average data center downtime, and average $505,500 cost per incident. Primary causes for unplanned outages were UPS Failure (29%); accidental/human error (24%); water, heat, or cooling failure (15%); weather issues (12%); generator failure (10%); IT equipment failure (5%); and other issues (5%). Only a third of the IT staffs said they had adequate resources in order to recover from a failure. Emerson – 12, May , 2011
Semikron presents New IGBT module for 3-level inverters Semikron presents its newest MiniSKiiP IGBT power module, 3-level topology, enabling the development of up to 85 kVA. Revers voltage of the IGBTs and diodes has been increased to 650 V, enabling DC link voltages of 900 V for 480 V three-phase power applications typical in commercial or industrial settings in the United States. Thermal and electrical connection to heat sink and driver board is established with a single or two screws for module currents of up to 150 A or 200 A, respectively. ECN-Europe – 12, May 2011
New APC Efficiency Booster Mode for Its MGE Galaxy 7000 UPS Offers 30% Energy Saving. APC releases high Efficiency Booster Mode (EBM) operation for MGE Galaxy 7000 UPS systems connected in parallel. According to APC, the new EBM features offers to realize up to 30% energy savings by enabling UPS systems to be right-sized to meet load conditions or redundancy requirements, by automatically placing underutilised UPS power modules into sleep (standby) mode when system load is much lower than the installed capacity. The solution is implemented without any compromise to system protection quality or redundancy, such as associated with Eco mode operation. Sourcewire- 11, May 2011
