Editorial Topic: Procuring UPS systems on the Web
In our June 2009 newsletter we have highlighted, recent International Standards requirements to
increase server power factor rating, to above 0.9
Practically, it means that UPS users should check when buying a UPS not only the UPS VA rating but
also its Watt rating. Both should be above respective load requirements. More on this subject was
presented to the public by our article titled Consider required Watts before buying a UPS , expanded by
other companies also to three phase systems; see for instance an article on UPS Mart website.
To see how such UPS selection can be implemented, we have checked some online distributors
websites and shopping engines like Biz - Rate . The results indicate that more than 70% of presented
UPS systems consider only VA rating. No information with regard to Wattage is presented. This led us
to investigate additional Internet sources.
Online UPS systems are more sensitive to output power Factor, compared to standby or Line
Interactive types. APC's 3kVA Line Interactive Smart UPS for instance has 2850W rating whereas a
3KVA Online Smart UPS Watt rating is only 2100Watt.
The difference is in Charger and Inverter power processing method. Line Interactive UPS has a small
charger and an inverter for a limited time operation. Whereas Online UPS operates continuously, and it's
Rectifier/ Charger supplies both the charging current and the input Wattage to UPS inverter.
To see if sufficient information is available on search engines to guide a buyer, we have decided to
check a popular 3kVA online unit, for North American server market.
1. Initial review was made by entering in Google Search the phrase: "UPS 3kVA On Line Rack Mount
120V", and analyzing the first 5 pages (50 items).
Interesting results were obtained:
a. Only 10 products out of 50 indicated also the Wattage.
b. The results are distributed as follows:
27 items ( 54% ) were APC make systems.
15 items ( 30% ) were TrippLite make.
3 items (6%) were Eaton products.
2 items ( 4% ) Minuteman Type.
3 items ( 6%) Not relevant.
c. Most items were not On line, but Line Interactive.
2. To get rid of the Line interactive Type we entered the Phrase : " UPS double
conversion 3000VA Rack Mount 120V"
Following Results were obtained :
APC: 26 items ( 52%) . Relevant : 22 ( 44%)
TrippLite: 16 items (32%) . ( All relevant)
Eaton: 3 items( 6%) : Only one relevant (Two discontinued type PW 9125).
Minuteman 2 items ( 4%) , Powercom : 1 ( 2%) , Falcon : 1 ( 2%)
3. Yahoo shows similar results.
Review shows that almost 85% of results are shared by two companies, indicating that most sales are
still done by conservative pre internet B2C networking.
It is however clear that due to Keyword and Links based Search Engine algorithms, and manufacturer's
negligence to invest in Internet promotion major UPS providers, like Eaton, Emerson, Chloride, GE lose
already market share. They will probably suffer more loss in future, upon learning that today's Internet
become tomorrow's reality, and that young impersonal Internet addicts replace traditional connections
between sellers and buyers.
The said market change will probably happen with a Digital speed, much faster than expected. APC will
prove once more, as it did again and again in the past, that it understands best UPS market and users
requirements.
The review clarifies that Internet search and sales engines do not provide sufficient information, and
that information from other sources is required.
No product directories, as such are available on the web. UPS Manufacturer's directories should
therefore be consulted to find proper producers, and check their products in order to support
comprehensive buying decision.
This seems to be more "easily done than said". Entering in Google the phrase "UPS Manufacturer's
Directory" returns 845,000 results. Even if we consider earnest directories, such as indicated on our
Links page, we will find hundreds of companies. Most without any relation to UPS systems, that joined
the directories mainly to gain back links.
In June we have presented on our website a directory of online single phase UPS units. At the time, as
explained in our June newsletter, our aim was mainly to provide a solution for the VA/Watt problem
caused by recent standards.
However, the described difficulty of locating a proper UPS on the Web sheds new light on the
importance of the directory. The directory presents an Ideal solution for a real problem facing people
looking for UPS system to solve their power protection needs.
UPSonNet Website News
The first version of Online single phase Rack mounted UPS systems directory aimed to offer a solution
for the VA/Watt problem in data centers caused by new server standards requirements.
The reviews above however, indicate that it is almost impossible to collect from the Internet, within
reasonable time, enough information for a comprehensive purchasing decision. Neither sales, or search
engines, nor UPS company directories provide the needed information.
Thus it seems that our product directory provides an important and unique tool, to solve a real problem
facing people looking for UPS systems.
Consequently, we have decided on the following revisions:
• We allow also free subscriptions for relevant companies. Thus, users looking for specific
solutions can explore additional alternatives.
• To enable users to contact a local supplier, each company product can link to a page providing
contact details of local professional distributors. (This issue is still under construction for some
companies).
•Subscribers can vote for receiving relevant RFQs , which we accept from visitors ( Free
service).
To add your company to the directory or see the available options, please subscribe.
Add your company if it sells and provides professional service solutions to relevant UPS systems.
Fill in the subscribe form, for future updating, even if your company is already included, go to:

Industry News
August was relatively a quiet month for business. Summer vocations are reflected in the low crop of
business news.
UPS manufacturer's efforts however, to expand markets, by means of agreements with distributors are
worth noting:
GE concludes distribution agreements with Titan Energy and Para Systems.
Titan Energy complements its Generator Backup Lines with GE's equipment. Whereas, Parasystem ,
expands is single phase Minuteman UPS line, by the ability to offer GE's High Power Three Phase UPS's.
CyberPower gains access to a large market by signing on Distribution agreement with Tech Data, a
worldwide IT distributor.
