Editorial topic: Experiencing power failure incident
Power Failures in January override any other issue; our main focus for January is therefore dedicated
to this.
By no means was it a single occurrence, here we present a partial list of power failures for a single
day, for instance, the 22nd of January 2009:
- A tree falling on grid line resulted in equipment failure in substation, near Dothan Alabama USA
disconnecting about 1,200 consumers for a few hours.
- A circuit-breaker failure at a substation in the town of Oswegatchie , NY, USA caused a
power outage of a few hours to more than 6,000 customers.
- Equipment failure in USA Pacific Gas and Electric Co, left about 4000 people in Northern
California without power for 2 hours
- High Winds near Barcelona Spain caused extended power collapse, killing four children and
injuring 16 other people.
- A fault in an underground power cable left some 1,855 Hawaiian Electric Company customers
without electricity on this afternoon.
- Simultaneous faults on two high voltage lines cut electricity supplies for 2 hours in north
Queensland , Australia .
To experience an exercised odyssey, and get a feeling of how things can go when power fails, let’s
hear Mr. Jim Nelson, External Affairs Manager of Embarq’s exchange corporation, explaining the
events that led to the loss of telephone service for most of North Lincoln County in Oregon USA:
- During the night of Dec.20 the power in our Sheridan host office failed.
- An emergency backup generator kicked in as it is designed to do.
- Unfortunately, a failure occurred with the power transfer panel.
- The next few hours, we ran on battery backup shutting off at 4:30 a.m.
- At that point, we lost telephone service. In the morning, local technicians
discovered not having telephone service and began to investigate.
- They found out that the generator was still running, but there was smoke
coming out of the building from that transfer panel.
- The technician couldn't get in the building for longer than 30 seconds at a
time because of the toxicity of the smoke.
- At 2 PM Sunday, the panel was restored. We began to restore service
- By 7 p.m. Sunday night, we were completely restored,”

Lessons from UPS price Study.
We have performed a study of North American UPS systems Industry prices. The results are
presented on UPS Price list. The price list shows that in certain cases On -Line UPS is cheaper than
same size Line Interactive system. And that in some cases considerable power growth is associated
with only marginal price increase.
The Study thus calls for performing a Cost Oriented Evaluation stage, before the spec is forwarded to
the purchasing department. The issue is explained in Our Press Release, called: “Protect Your Data
and Your Budget when Buying a UPS”
A guide, explaining how the price list can be practically put to work to decrease considerably the cost
of UPS systems is presented on the site, titled: “Boost Your ROI using UPS Industry Price list “.
